Aqueducts into the Wild
Excursion to Tivoli seeking for Ancient Roman Aqueducts
Program:
A day trip excursion to the surroundings of Tivoli (25 km south-west of Rome) hunting surprising ruins hidden by nature: the ancient roman aqueducts, the highest example of the Romans engineering skills. We will drive you to the countryside and walk you into the wild to bring you where no tourist has never been before. Just us, nature and those giants of brickwork and concrete which supplied with water Rome and her 1.5 million inhabitants during the Empire. And afterwards, as a prize a great lunch in Tivoli or Palestrina (depending on the weather) in a restaurant just for locals.
Where:
The area of
Tivoli and Palestrina, easily reachable from Rome by car or train, is rich of travertine marble quarries and natural springs of water. It was chosen by the
Emperors as the water supply area of the City. An intricate and extraordinary
collection of ancient aqueducts survived the centuries covered and protected by
the wild nature of the forests. Only few people know about their existence and how to reach them.
